Best Handheld GPS?
Hello friends! Well I'm thinking of buying my husband a handheld gps for our anniversary. My budget is less than $200, I want something simple and easy to program that we can use for a drive or camping, hiking and etc. What do you think is the best one? any suggestions? Thank you!
Geocaching: Searching for Treasures
I have really taken to this hobby sport. Geocaching involves using a handheld gps receiver to find hidden treasures, usually in the woods. The website, Geocaching.org explains it all. That is the main international website where people post where they have hidden the cache, along with the coordinates. Usually, the cache is in tupperware or a water-proof container. Inside is a log that you sign, and a small trinket. You can take a trinket but you have to leave one, too. This has been a great way to explore parts of our community and state that I would not have normally gone to. I have found spots around the Twin Cities that you just would not expect. There is a spot near home that is almost like being in the mountains. You walk a trail, looking down into a valley. It also gives the added benefit of exercise. Once you make the find, you log it on the website and add any info you want. I have about 115 finds so far. This is an international game, with more caches being added everyday.Young kids really like it because of the prizes. Try it out sometime!
Geocaching - Treasure Hunting For the Modern World
So, I'm shocked. There's not a single topic about geocaching on myLot. Thus, I figure it's time to educate some folks.:)Geocaching is this really fun game you play using a handheld GPS navigator and a website (http://geocaching.com). Using the website, you can find the GPS coordinates to hundreds of thousands of "caches," small containers hidden throughout the world. Punch the coordinates into your GPS, follow it to the destination, then search around until you find the cache. Sign the log and become part of one of today's fastest growing sports.Caches are everywhere! In local parks, hidden near lakes and hiking trails, behind Wal-marts and CVS pharmacies, even inside malls and libraries. Most of them are hidden so well, you'll never even know they were there. Caches range in size from tiny film-cannisters containing a logsheet to large boxes hidden in the woods, full of various small tradable trinkets. Take something, leave something. You never know what you'll find. People have even left things like cash prizes or gift cards in caches. It really is a lot of fun, and very addictive. Not to mention, it's great exercise; while most caches are fairly easy to access, some...
How to Choose a GPS
The first thing to decide is how you plan on using a GPS, and the second is how much you plan on spending on a GPS. Do you plan on using it in your car, for hiking and backpacking, or for hunting and/or fishing? Current GPS receivers are limited as to what they can do and are optimized for a specific purpose. There are GPS specifically for flying, others for hunting and/or fishing, and others for car navigation. A few are just an electronic map that shows your position on the map screen. Others have no maps at all and can be just fine if you just want to know your longitude/latitude.If you plan on using your GPS in an automobile, there are several choices: a basic or mapping handheld receiver; a dedicated automotive receiver; a GPS with a PDA; or a Laptop GPS.Although handheld units can be used in a car there are several disadvantages-the screen can be hard to see due to its small size and some units need to be placed forward on the dashboard where they can get a better signal. With a basic (non-mapping) unit you can tell where you are, as long as you have a paper map with you, to interpret that data.A mapping unit is the more useful choice considering driving usually...
Waymarking
Are you a waymarker?Whatis waymarking? A sister of geocaching (looking for hidden caches), it is a guide to unique, interesting, and useful locations in the world. A handheld GPS, camera, and free membership to Waymarking.com is required. There are many different categories. You can log visits to sites that are listed or discover new places and add them.Any fellow waymarkers want to share their adventures?
"Geocaching
In the Summer and Autumn months a friend of mine and I enjoy going on long hikes through the woods around this area. Everytime we hike me always make jokes that we would love to find a hidden treasure.... I recently found geocaching! Teams of hikers, search for treasure (barried by other teams) through the woods using handheld GPS devices!! You hide one....you find one! It sounds awesome and I know I will be checking it out this summer!! If you are interested: check it out www.geocaching.comAnyone ever heard of geocaching?? Ever participated???
